JSPS Cairo Research Station took part in the visit of the Japanese Ambassador Mr. Takehiro Kagawa to Menoufiya University on May 4, 2016.

On May 4, H.E. Takehiro Kagawa, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt visited Menoufia
University and was received by Prof. Dr. Meawad M. El Kholy, President of Menoufia
University, together with the vice-presidents, deans, and members of the Academic
Staff. H.E. Takehiro Kagawa gave a special lecture on "Egyptian-Japanese Partnership
in Education & Scientific Research". At the ambassador’s lecture, there was a
discussion on the avenues of cooperation between Menoufia University and Japanese
universities and presenting proposals of cooperation protocols aim to increase
researchers to Japan. The Ambassador Kagawa said that 8000 of Egyptians studied and trained in Japan during the past fifty years but in recent years 200 of Egyptians were sent in missions annually, many of them were appointed in prominent positions in the government and became professors, scholars and businessmen. Moreover, the
Ambassador Mr. Kagawa added that Egypt-Japan University for Science and
Technology (E-JUST) is the cornerstone of cooperation between Japanese and
Egyptian governments, as the Japanese government supported E-JUST by sending
experts and professors for short and long periods in addition to students exchange and
academic staff between two countries. He pointed out that Japanese and Egyptian
governments, after the visit of H.E. President Abd El-Fattah El-Sisi to Japan,
announced sending during the next five years at least 2500 Egyptians of students,
researchers, teachers and employees especially in the field of learning and health, the
matter that achieves the state’s strategic plan in developing. He also emphasized the
role of youth in different work fields in the current century, and the importance of
providing them such as academic exchange programs, undergraduate and graduate
students training, and scientific research. Furthermore, he encouraged the
establishment of center for studying Japanese language under the auspices of public
service center, Menoufia University in an effort to introduce students to the Japanese
culture as well as to help the university students to learn Japanese especially whom
plan to study in Japan.
During his visit, the ambassador made tour to the national liver institute, and
was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Meawad M. El Kholy and received by the dean of the
Institute Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Sharkawy, where he visited various sections of the
institute. The ambassador praised the considerable efforts made in the success of this
global medical institution especially in liver transplant surgeries in collaboration with Dr.
Koichi Tanaka, Kyoto University who has conducted over 2,000 live-donor liver
transplant surgeries. The ambassador also visited the Faculty of Agriculture facilities
and was received by the dean of the Faculty Prof. Adel El Beltagy (JSPS alumnus). At
the end of the meeting, Prof. El Kholy presented the university shield to the
ambassador wishing more cooperation between Menoufia University and Japanese universities.
